Pour it out!

Psalm 142

With my voice I cry to the Lord;

with my voice I make supplication to the Lord.

I pour out my complaint before him;

I tell my trouble before him.

When my spirit is faint,

you know my way

Have you ever felt so bogged down with life that you just wanted to bury your head in the sand? When David writes Psalm 142, he is in a very challenging place in his life. David is basically living on a large rock in the dessert running from Saul and his army who is seeking to kill him. All David really had were tears and a prayer.

In the path where I walk

they have hidden a trap for me.

Look on my right hand and see—

there is no one who takes notice of me;

no refuge remains to me;

no one cares for me.

I cry to you, O Lord;

I say, “You are my refuge,

my portion in the land of the living.”

Give heed to my cry,

for I am brought very low.

I encourage you, when you feel like burying your head in the sand to reconsider the image of sand. Let’s for a moment make the sand your metaphorical worries instead of your metaphorical escape. If the sand is that which weighs you down, do not bury yourself in it. Do not let it surround you in darkness or let it swallow you up. Instead, pour your heart out to God, just like David does in Psalm 142. Let God’s feet be immersed in the sand grains of your worries, burdens, weaknesses, insecurities, fears, and complaints leaving His perfect footprints in the midst of it all relieving you of concern.

Save me from my persecutors,

for they are too strong for me.

Bring me out of prison,

so that I may give thanks to your name.

The righteous will surround me,

for you will deal bountifully with me.

David remembered God’s plans for his life, to be king over all Israel. May we also remember God has perfect plans and perfect timing for our own individual lives, so let the Lord’s footprints trample all over your world, and trust in God!
